Hi my name is Sarah Tagg and I am from Springfield, OH. My dad works for Ohio Edison while my mom works for Clark State. I have a seventeen year old sister named Katie and a dog named Charley. This past May, I graduated from Northwestern High School where I ran Cross Country and Track. I love running, reading, eating, watching movies, and getting free t-shirts whenever I can. My current occupation is lifeguarding at the Campus Recreation Center. I chose to teach high school mathematics after I discovered my love for the subject and my love of teaching others. After tutoring friends and peers, I knew I was meant to teach. The only classroom experience I have is tutoring sixth graders and tutoringhigh school students.
Reflection on the ISTE NETS-T Standards for Teachers
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
This standard is one of the most important standards that a teacher has. I believe that if students are shown how creative they can really be, then they would be more open to learning new things. Also, applying real-world issues and problems to the subject being taught is important so the student can see why they will need to know the material in the future. This also can get students to think about a possible career in the area being taught if they are interested in the real world examples. It is crucial for the teacher to know what students' views and understanding are on a certain subject through reflection or feedback. Teachers can actually learn more through their students. This can occur when students and teachers work together on learning the information so the educators can figure out the best way possible to teach. This standard is highly needed among teachers as a way to get students to think, become involved, and to be creative in the classroom. It is also helpful to teachers as they will learn more from their student by teaching them and gathering their feedback.
This standard relates to the topics learned and activities done in class in several ways. When presenting my group's lesson plan, we used the internet and the smart board as a technological way to solve problems. Also, the video showed and the story read was a very creative way to introduce the material to the class. The students were involved in the lesson in the way that they were called to the front to work out problems on the smart board and also in their individual group work. Finally, the students reflected on what they learned by taking the short quiz at the end. This gave the teachers a way to see their understanding on what was taught.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers: a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
Designing and developing learning experiences is important in how much students learn and how creative they can be. This is important because every student is different. Every student has different goals, learning styles and abilities. Customized activities are very beneficial to help students learn in several ways. Practicing several ways of learning is not just better for the student but it shows them the material more in-depth and makes them more well-rounded on the subject. In class we used this standard. One day in class, groups moved to different stations for a certain amount of time. Each station had its own unique learning style. For example, one station involved getting on the internet while the other showed a video. Having different learning experiences is very beneficial for students.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning
It is very important for teachers to incorporate technology into their classrooms. This is especially true for our society today which is becoming more and more modernized. Teachers who demonstrate technology in the classroom should be knowledgeable on what they are using and how they use it. This is so the students receive the full benefits from the technology and also know how to use it correctly. There are so many ways to communicate using technology these days so why not use it? I find it very useful in colleges classes where everything about the class is posted on blackboard. If I need to know something, the information is right at my fingertips. In class, we all communicate and work together especially through this wikispace. Also, we have used google docs where we all add our own work to the class' work as a whole.
